Time to ShakeOut!
It’s that time of year again to practice for potentially shaky days ahead. Earthquakes occur everyday in New Zealand, approximately 14,000 – 15,000 a year, and, whilst we do not feel most of them, between 150-200 are felt. The damage caused by quakes can be devastating, as Christchurch knows all too well about. So, it is always best to be prepared for such an event. Below is a message from ShakeOut: New Zealand ShakeOut, our national earthquake drill and tsunami hikoi, is taking place on Thursday 28 October at 9:30am. Sign up now The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management is encouraging all schools, businesses and households to sign up, hold a Drop, Cover and Hold drill, and plan a tsunami hīkoi if you are in a tsunami zone.
Why ShakeOut?
All of New Zealand is at risk of earthquakes and all of our coastline is at risk of tsunami. We can’t predict when they will happen, but we can protect ourselves and those we care about. Last year over 850,000 people took part in our annual event.
When is it?
This year, the time of the drill has moved to 9:30am so you can plan a morning of emergency preparedness, including a tsunami hīkoi if you’re near the coast. Once you’ve signed up, we’ll keep you posted with tips and hints for planning your drill and follow up activities.
