Welcome to The Security Institute of New Zealand (SINZ)

The Security Institute of New Zealand is dedicated to supporting the wider security industry by assisting in the professional development of individuals and organisations; the quality of security service, and promoting security and safety to all sectors of New Zealand.

SINZ provides advocacy to government, both national and local, by promoting standards, quality and professionalism. Putting it simply, we will let quality and the application of standards, quality and best practice drive the organisation forward.

Crime and victimisation

Crime in some areas is being reduced, but the level of victimisation is still far too high. There is a need for a body that provides dynamic leadership; that is available to all those working in the wider security industry. We have excellent industry specific organisations such as The New Zealand Institute of Professional Investigators (NZIPI), ASIS International and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), however for many years there has been a gap in the overall leadership in the security industry including the areas of standards, quality assurance and professionals.

Policing is no longer just the role of the Police. Our respected Police provide significant leadership in all aspects of crime prevention and response, however the emergence of ‘plural policing’ where the community by way of volunteers, such as Community Patrols, Maori Wardens and Neighbourhood Support NZ, as well as the paid corporate security sector assist Police to reduce crime and victimisation is changing our landscape. SINZ recognises that the Police need more support across all aspects of crime prevention and creating safer communities.

SINZ is dedicated to supporting the individuals, organisations, associations and businesses of New Zealand to maintain a safe and secure environment in which people in New Zealand can go about their daily activities safely and securely. It does this by providing dynamic and professional leadership, supporting the security sector in ensuring that the interface with security provider is informed, professional and based on standards, quality assurance and current best practices.

One of the focus points is the professional and academic development of all security personnel (including community volunteers) and security professionals across New Zealand. The intention is to become a Peak body for the wider New Zealand security industry. SINZ promotes operating standards within the security industry as well as safeguarding the public interest and promoting the security industry sector to the government, local bodies, public, clients and customers.

Mission Statement

Our aim is to provide leadership, advocacy, and supports to all who provide or receive security services across the broad range of activities and services needed to keep communities safe. Our foundations are built on the tenets and principles of standards, quality assurance and professionalism.

Community Security & Safety Volunteers

We recognise and support the volunteer community security and safety organisations as well as the individuals who dedicate their precious spare time and energy within their communities to make a difference for their neighbours and fellow community members. These people and organisations support the Police and communities and often work side-by-side security companies throughout New Zealand. SINZ membership is available to all security personnel, security companies, community organisations and groups and those with an interest in the security sector. The organisation actively represents all personnel operating in the security arena, not just those that are paying members of an association. We do not believe that representation can be truly considered fair and transparent unless everyone has an equal opportunity to participate.
